Default Sad News: Crossfield dies in crash

Scott Crossfield, the hotshot test pilot and aircraft designer who in 1953 became the first man to fly at twice the speed of sound, was killed in the crash of his small plane, authorities said Thursday. He was 84.

Crossfield's body was found in the wreckage Thursday in the mountains about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta, a day after the single-engine plane he was piloting dropped off radar screens on a flight from Alabama to Virginia. There were thunderstorms in the area at the time.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Crossfield was believed to be the only person aboard

I can't believe anyone would be trying to fly through the weather we've been having here the last 2 days. Strong winds, hail, and heavy deluges were forcast plenty of time in advance. This forecast extends into the next 2 days. Maybe he didn't want to park it for 4 days. I dunno.

Then again... I'd like to be flying at 84. Unfortunate.

There are a million reasons why this might've happened; I would encourage all to not assume anything. Weather may have been a contributng/causal factor or might not've been. No way to tell until investigation complete, and perhaps not even then.

I agree that we should not rush to judgement here.. And that we may never truly know.. however, the monday morning quarterback in me just looked up the prelim data from the FAA..

He was IFR.. was aware of weather, and was cleared to deviate around the weather...

and I will bet dollars to donuts that one of two things occured.. sudden incapacitation, or flight into weather beyond the limits of the plane/pilot.

That being said.. we've all got to die sometime.. life is a terminal condition.
