Default ASUS Eee as basis of DIY EFIS

With the ASUS Eee you get an ultra-portable Xandros Linux PC at US$ 199 to US$ 400 depending on configuration, flash memory thus no hard disk to crash at altitude, 7" screen, 10" in the pipeline. It's currently raising waves all over the IT world. I wish Karoliina would consider using it as the basis of her project.

You dont need to buy a PC with flash memory - just add a USB memory stick to any PC motherboard and boot it.

The ideal EFIS is Open Eagle Synthetic Vision which will require some horsepower to push it. There is only one person working on it, which seems to be typical of Glass Cockpit projects. Also, Open Eagle is not consumerized to the point where it is trivial to add new display gadgets viz displays, dials, and buttons.

I think it would be curious to fully glassify a cockpit so there was not a button or a dial left. Of course, the naysayers and windows users will be horrified at this concept, since a bluescreen means you actually will have to look out the flamin' window!! GASP!!
