Default Got heat?

Just wanted to post a cool picture of something you don't always get to see. We ran a Rotax 914 in the dark and the noticed the exhaust stacks start to glow...

Instrumentation said the BRIGHTEST pipe (#4, aft in the pic) was just barely above the "nominal" temp (1650 deg F). The rest were running "cool".

The Rotax dealer said "Yep... these engines aren't certified for night flight so folks don't usually get to see what you all did. No worries, it's normal. Just watch the gauges and have fun!!"

... and to think that we had actually considered not wrapping the pipes.

You should see the looks on people's faces when they look at the cowl vents on our turbo planes at night. I've gotten everything from "Is the engine running hot?" to "I think the engine is on fire!!"

It has the same nice pretty orange glow as you can see in your picture.

Then on our Merlin III's you can look right up the ass end of the turbine as it starts up, as you reach the start temp limit the rear turbine wheel starts glowing bright orange, again a pretty sight.

PT6's have a nice blue flamefront that is visible out of the exhaust stacks at night as well.
