Default explosion at scaled facility

This was just on the news here.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,291039,00.html

The pictures from the chopper showed trailers with the scaled logo on them surrounding the site.

I expect Marc's on his way to, or already at, OSH right now. Don't know about Len. Maybe he's along for the ride....

The text and pictures I can grab from Google News say that it was a fuel tank filling trailer that went up due to a nitrous oxide (Scaled's NO2/Rubber binary rocket fuel? -dp) explosion.

I can't make much out of the image except that it looks like a fuel trailer that was involved in a very hot fire, a test stand that was knocked over and bent, and that the 'remote area' of the field where it happened is a real mess.

Hopefully there's no more bad news to come from this...I sure hope our guys are OK.

Apparently Burt was on his way, and when the news teams caught up with him, he had no more information than anyone else.

I just spoke with Dani (Len's wife). Len and Marc are at Oshkosh and are okay.

Good to know. I'm still bummed after reading some other reports though. Burt lost 2 guys, and had 4-6 more get hurt pretty bad, depending on what you read. Thought and prayers go out to all involved.

I can't comment, as I only know what is being reported. Please pray for our colleagues and their families.

It was likely this equipment that was involved in the accident today:

http://tinyurl.com/2q7yld

Nitrous is fairly safe to handle as far as rocket fuel is concerned (and I say this after just having loaded sensitive explosives into an igniter for a 32" diameter, 15 foot long solid rocket motor yesterday with electrical grounding straps attached!).

But, problems can occur if the nitrous gets too hot and dissociates. That is an exothermic reaction that can burst a pressure vessel. It sounds like something related to handling of the nitrous went wrong, and that it wasn't during a rocket test. Nobody should be near enough to get hurt if it was during a test.

I expressed a concern the other day that Northrop Grumman might impose many of their procedures on Scaled after acquisition that would impact the way that Scaled does business. With this incident, it is certainly even more likely to occur.

My condolences to those involved in this accident, and their families and co-workers.

I am not the praying type, but I understand the sentiment.

Regardless of how shallow this may seem, I am glad to hear it is not you, nor Marc. You two were the first ones I thought of when I found out about the accident, and until I got affirmation, the whole situation brought back memories of another accident:when our local aeromedical guys went down.

I knew everyone at that operation personally, and it was hard enough knowing that 3 weren't coming home, even before we found the names out.

I for one, am not seeking details outside of the normal channels, and will let you and your colleagues take care of business and yourselves.

With condolences,
David Staten

I am glad to hear tht Marc and Len are OK. I am sure it will be hard in the coming weeks when they realize which co-workers they won't be seeing on Monday.

A number of years ago we lost 7 at our complex. I knew three of them quite well. It amazed me about the people (or person, in this case) closest to the event could not remember a thing about it.

There will be many tough days ahead for the people at Scaled. The good news is that Scaled is a top notch organization, they will figure it out and make sure it does not happen again.

If anyone knows Rutan personally, please convey to him my sincerest condolences for the tragic loss of life. It is my sincerest hope that those undergoing treatment make the fullest possible recovery, and the grieving families of those whose lives were not spared are comforted.

I also hope that the cause of this accident can be determined, the problem(s) addressed, the information shared for the benefit of all, and that the Scaled Composite team can continue to advance the vision of affordable, private space travel so that these sacrifices were not in vain.

Sincerely,
Bruce Shankle

Here is the information as it presented on the Scaled Composites site:

Scaled Composites apologizes for our web site being down during such a crisis but it is beyond our control. We have made this web page for temporary updates and information until our web site provider comes back online.

Dear Friends,

The outpouring of support from around the world has been incredible, and we can't thank you enough for all the support you have given us.

As of this morning (Saturday), three that were injured remain hospitalized: Keith Fritsinger (critical), Gene Gisin (critical), and Jason Kramb (serious).

Glen May's family has advised us that his funeral is Friday, August 3, in Collierville, TN. They have requested that anyone at Scaled that has special memories of Glen that they would like to share with the family to please email aprildmay at aol dot com . Other arrangements are pending, and will be posted when we have them. We're trying to do what we can to support the families during this tragic time. We will plan to show our respects as a company at the appropriate time, as well.

Several Scaled folks have spent time with Eric Blackwell's family over the last two days, and will continue to support them in these difficult days. Todd Ivens' family is enroute to California.

A fund is being established to help the families. We will post the information on our website as soon as it's available.

The accident investigation has begun. We spent several hours at the site on Friday morning. Late Friday afternoon, California OSHA arrived and has sealed the site for their own investigation. We are working closely with them.

This is an incredibly hard time for all of us. We continue to ask you to keep those people and families who were hurt or have died in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

The Scaled Composites Family
