Low wing big engine planes can't see down and front too well. Looks like he caught the rear horiz. or vert. stab. then reacted with the stick. Shit happens to the most skilled. That really sucks. I'm bummed. Two more P51's and another good pilot bite it. Not a good couple weeks for the experimental AC community.

It gets worse; I heard the father was in the lead plane, his son in the one that flipped over.

That was the initial rumor, but the two men were not father-son. The names have been released and the last names do not match. May he RIP.

The surviving pilot is Casey Odegarrd. I believe his father is Bob Odegarrd and he flys the Super Corsair that was also flying in the race demonstration.

From the video, it's easy to see what happened. The lead didn't land long enough. The trailing plane didn't stay low enough and lost sight of the lead. When the trailing plane realized he was overtaking the lead, he added power. P-51s have a nasty habit of torque rolling when too much power is added on takeoff or on the go around.

Barry Schiff discusses P-51 torque rolling in his feature article in this month's AOPA Pilot.

I witnessed the crash. Actually my back was turned when they landed, but I saw the aftermath.

Note that the rear plane was a clipped wing, and thus had a higher landing speed.

Here is a power point of a collection of still shots from the P-51 crash at Oshkosh.
