I've had six gear up landings! All on my IFR desktop simulator. Yes, I treated the training sessions like a real flight. Even had my cue cards and checklists. Even recited them in my head. Of the 2,000 or so runs I've made on the sim, these 6 times were approaches into "somewhere new" with something slightly off-nominal about the approach. Like people are saying, get distracted, do something out of order, or worse yet -- postpone dropping the gear..... Bang!

What I find worse, is that I'll have just flown the Cozy III. I'll be driving home and I don't remember putting the gear down. I mean, I did out the gear down. So I must have run my checklist. Hmmmm. I just find it ironic that I can' remember it.

My Cozy IV gets an audio and visual warning system. It also gets a skidplate. And those of you proudly beating your chest? The self-righteous will be humbled.....eventually.

It is becoming intuitive then. This is infinately better than what you would remember if you didn't put the gear out.

There is nothing wrong with the warning systems. They represent insured saftey.

For those of us flying it would be interesting for our fellow builders to know how many times we have gotten the gear up warning in advance and had the time to correct the problem. I can say that in 20 years of flyng, I got the gear up warning twice before my incident occured. The third and final time was the equipment failure.

Two times being saved by the buzzer and one not is when I needed a wake up call and a behavior change. The problem was not in the aircraft.

Since then, not once and hopefully never again.

I put a check mark in the "ONE" block too........
During down wind, I was perturbed by a "too close" trafic, skip "gear down" in check list; still angry don't perform final check list, ..............and land gear up.
No warning exist. I install the standard VariEze from section III, with LEDs, and chnage it it order to get :
3 green LEDs . ."Power to idle" WITH "Extended and locked gear".
4 STRONG red LED "Power to idle" WITHOUT "Extended and locked gear".

Plan to install an horn also, as winter job.
Perform checklist, and Perform checklist, and Perform checklist, and Perform checklist, and Perform checklist, and .......
That only has to be automatized .... in your brain.

Regards to you all.

It was the best landing I ever made, (Los Banos, CA). Fortunately, I didn't have a passenger and there wasn't anyone at the airport (that I'm aware of). Its amazing how hard the "thunk" is when the nose impacts the runway, Stops pretty fast also.

Did I follow the checklist? To the best of my memory, I did.

Did I have a warning system? Yes one of those little pukey LEDS that I thought I would see. ( I now have a 120db klaxon horn, the same that is installed on every military jet I've ever flown)

I silently snicker to myself when I hear someone say this will never happen to them, as they follow the checklist religiously, or the warning light will get their attention; All I can say is, I hope your right.

(SIDE NOTE: I know of one person who retracted the nose gear just after touchdown in order to stop on the remaining runway. This was an emergency dead stick and touched down with less than 500ft remaining.)

After my gearup I developed a new procedure that seems to work well for me (so far) - on short final I say outload "Gear is down" as I check. Long ago I had "Finals, three greens" drummed into me in the RAF, so this speaking to myself on final was easy to adopt as a habit.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that will get funny looks from passengers for talking to myself. I normally say it and also touch the instrument or control. Its something I picked up from my previous boss.

I've never done a gear up in an airplane (yet) but did manage it while skydiving once......Perfect landing right on my ass....happens when you somehow manage to pull a hamstring while in freefall

i dont understand how you can EVER have a gear up landing.

if you are qualified to fly a complex airplane and are landing gear up, you need to give it up!!

dont say, "well, people make mistakes"......aviation is very unforgiving and, in my opinion, if you cant hang with a complex airplane (retractable gear), then you need to head off to LSA and try not to hurt yourself.....

this seems to be a constant theme. whenever someone brings up the idea of retracts on an EZ, the first thing mentioned is, "what happens if you land gear up".....are you KIDDING ME??????????

UGH!!!!!!!!!

4 posts. Hmmm.
Usually one lets out a little squeaker of a fart to test the acceptance in the room. You went for the whole tuba effect without lookin', soon as you threw open the door.
O.K. maybe you are the cat of cats. Mr experience. Good on ya.
So with that.....
All the actual guys building canards, or flyin' canards must now exit the building...to LSA land.* Yes, that dimly lit exit in the far east corner of the auditorium.
All the guys who are farting around thinking about building a canard or are wannabee hopeful theorist canardians are allowed to stayyyyyy.....
Yah....
I dunno- we've got guys with fighterjet time here that have done it...heavy metal jumbo jet and military fliers here that have done it....Berkut designers that I think did it....and etc etc.
Yep- real boneheads.

I hope someday to be worthy of these bonehead guys company....but thats just me.

So maybe my sarcasm is as they say, the sign of a weak mind.

*[due to the axiom, that if you haven't someday you WILL]

Fly a retract and you will understand for EVER.

I have never met a pilot of a retractable aircraft that thinks he cannot forget. EVER.

As SOF (Supervisor of Flying) one of the duties was to sit out on the end of the runway with a pair of Binoculars, and check the gear down of every plane that is landing.

Maybe, about once a year, the SOF will make the call; "Bangi 25, check gear down"

AND THEN THEREs

One of the SOPs is to check gear down on the base leg to final, and make the call:

"Bangi 25 base leg, gear down".

Then when you look, Bangi 25 doesn't have the gear down!!!!!! He swears he followed the checklist and seen three green.

I could go ON and ON and ON.
