Default canopy opened in flight

a buddy called me earlier, canopy opened in flight, Stainles steel "spring", which is not spring material failed to catch it. Landed somewhere off airport.

Major damage to plane, buddy is OK

now the problem, do i add months to the build for safety and make mine front hinged.

The gods of safety say yes

well, i am going against my best judgement. I am not going to change canopy opening to front hinged.

As of right now my canopy locking handle interferes with the stick so no proper latching, no flight.

But this area will continue to be looked at.

For those of you with the stainless steel "spring" safety catch, lose it, make one that uses a real spring that will not take a new set with every use. A piece of hinge with a spring attached and an extension to emulate the shape of the plans catch should work well.

Just had a long talk with my buddy. He made many good decisions, thereby saving his life and plane.

Flew during the day

Hit nearest on the GPS and seemingly an hour later was rewarded with 9.5 miles, with the canopy open and the engine shot because of something flying out of the plane and trashing the prop, new he could not make it.

flew the plane at all times

found a road and made a good landing

good going, my hats off to you

things he wishes he had done

replaced the SS piece with a piece made from appropriate material

installed VG's, would have really liked the 10 knot decrease in landing speed

You forgot to mention "your buddy" should have had a horn. Are you installing one?
