Default One year into the build...

And I was wondering how my pace is...? We only have one step to complete in Chapter 8, then on to Chapter 9 - the main landing gear and landing brake.

My question is: If I continue at this pace - one year to get to Chapter 9 - how does this compare to builders who have completed the plane? IOW - am I on a pace to be flying in 3 more years, 4 more years, 5 more years or more?

Phil ..... I keep my eye on two things:
1) what I have accomplished so far.
2) what I'm working on today

I never want to spend any time thinking about how much I have left to do. If I find myself asking those questions, I get out to the garage and get after it, or I study the chapter I'm working on,
or I work on some of the small stuff while catching the news on TV.

Anything to keep my mind off of how far I have to go.

I really am enjoying this project so far and am doing my best to keep it that way. Finishing the project will take care of itself.

Q. How do you eat a whale?
A. One bite at a time.

You're moving faster than I - I'm also a year in and you're two chapters ahead of me!

I'm lucky in that I have a really good helper - my son - and he keeps me going! I was just wondering how my pace fit with those who have built the plane in 5 years or less. I really don't want this to drag on for 10 years - I want to fly the thing before I lose my medical!

'Course, my son doesn't care - he just wants to make sure it gets done so he can inherit it!

chapter 9 - 26 = 17 chapters to go
and you look like a two month chapter kinda guy, so 17 times 2 months =34 months at the pace you are going.
but if i can talk you in to a mod or two we CAN add years to that

I did chapters 1-9 in the first year also. In the next year I will be lucky to have completed 10 and 11. I just put the elevator cores on the torque tubes today. Not that these chapters have taken forever, just too much other stuff getting in the way of building this year. It felt good getting back into the shop and doing some building today.

First year, chapters 1-9: 443 hours

10 months into second year, chapter 10 & about 1/3 way thru 11: 58 hours

Don't let things get in the way. I need to remind myself this a bit more often.

Phil, with your son at your side that's an image many of us has dreamed about. Good for you. Keep it going.

Best family heirloom I can think of. Better than some old tools and war medals. Objects made by your ancestors are precious like old family stories. Most the tools and junk I inherited are sold in garage sales. The simple old wooden boxes and hand made things I keep to me are priceless.

LOL! I'm really fighting the urge to change things, believe me! I know that some chapters are more complex and longer than others. Chapter 8, for example, is pretty easy, but Chapter 9 looks like it could take a year by itself!

Phil:

I bought my plans a couple of months behind you I just finished my elevators today. So I am done with chapt. 10-11, I have a ton of hours in chapt. 11 because I made all of my own metal parts this easily doubled the amount of time to build this chapt. I have my landing gear in hand plus wheels and brakes. So I will start hard and heavy this week. If I can keep the money up I will be done in 4 more years I am sure. I am enclosing a Pic. of my canard wing tip this was kind of fun. STeve

Way to go Steve! Lookng good! I take it you skipped Chapter 9?

My son soloed this morning - that's the main reason we have not been able to spend a lot of time on the plane lately. Plus he made the golf team at school, so our time has really been limited. Back in gear soon!

Yeah I skipped chapt. 9 while waiting to save up enough money for the gear legs and breaks. I now have them in hand. Chapt 11 is almost done. I have started doing the fuselage strengthening layups in Chapt. 9. My next chapter will probably be 14 center section spar it is not to exspensive and will give me some more time to save up for all that exspensive nose gear stuff. STeve
