Default Camping at Oshkosh '07

Can I get some advice on camping at Oshkosh? This will be my first time attending the event and I'll be there Friday and Saturday, so I'm contemplating "roughing it" and pitching a tent beside the car in order to get more out of the whole OSH experience.
Do I need to book a site ahead of time? If so, would there still be space, based on typical attendance/vancancies?
Is there anything fun to do in the evenings if you're camping?
Joe

I camped with my family for the last two years in Camp Schoeller right at the airport. I can't say we roughed it, as our tent is kind of like a nylon Taj Mahal, but I can say that many people do camp there for the whole week.

If you are showing up on Friday, then there should be lots of interstitial spaces available, as many of the early campers seem to start leaving on Thursday. Coming in this late, I wouldn't count on any space in Kamp Kozy, but there may be some space near other forum members. You don't need a reservation for camp space, but it is helpful to coordinate with others if you intend to camp in the same area. The EAA operates a camper finder service, so if you know somebody's real name (not forum handle) you can attempt to locate them in the campground.

Another option I was made aware of last year is camping at the Oshkosh YMCA. I can't remember the details now, but it seemed like an attractive option, as you would have more protection against violent weather events and I think they run a shuttle to the event. I believe it was cost-competitive with Camp Schoeller, and it has a pool.

I had planned on camping again this year, but my wife had worked out some hotel points/airmiles deal at an area hotel for the few nights we will be there. Completely surprised me.

Steve I often wonder if you are accompanied by an interpreter when they let you out?

I just usually shrug my shoulders and go on to the next post.

it was a addlib from the girls 2 years ago.
there is a beer drinking spot out side the park.
its hard to find with all the campers so they put a big ball on a pole
and at night you can find it becase it looks like the moon..lol

Yes, the fire pit was there.

This was my first time at Oshkosh and I have to say that I had an absolutely fantastic time. The camping was fun, everything seemed to be very well run, and the people were really nice.

I want to thank all the Cozy & LongEZ owners who answered my questions, gave me advice, allowed me to take all kinds of photos, let me sit in their planes, etc. What a great bunch of people!

And to top it all off, I went to the Aircraft Spruce booth and picked up my new Cozy Mark IV plans #1500!!!

What a great way to start off the building experience. I look forward to the day when I'll be able to fly to Oshkosh in my own Cozy Mark IV and join all the great folks in the flightline. Time to start building!

Grats on getting your plans. Now, don't be like me and start building 10 years after you get them!

Better than me ....... I waited close to 25 years but what the heck, we're both building now right!
(in case anyone is doing the math ..... I bought my plans when I was 12!)
