Agree with Waiter. Do all the structural bulkheads and forget the 15 plies. Heck, you can use that glass elsewhere for now.

Tmann, I too have wanted JD's gear for some time I even once had a set of his first design in hand. You mention having spoke with him recently, what is his situation now as for producing gear?

I have been keeping touch with Chris Esseltyn he is working on marketing landing gear similar to the Velocity and the ones he used in his Cozy MKIV. These retracts will require the hard points that are used in the fixed gear Cozy.

I'm expecting mine by end of summer. J D says he has enough to go to production. I don't know if that means he will wait until Oshkosh (I would assume so, that's what I would do.)

I really don't like the gear that hinges at the fuselage. The legs flex at an angle vs. the oleo strut. I'll be talking with him and try to confirm that.

I think I'm missing something... where are these 15 layer BID reinforcements called out? The above seems to imply that they are on both Cozy and Longs, but I didn't see them in my Ch5 Cozy plans? Are they called out later, and are people doing them earlier for some reason?

Hey Craig.
These may be Long-EZ specific.
In step 3 after you do the longerons & LWX & LWY there are 6 plies laid up over a 1 inch filler of Poly-U (see the blue area in the center section on post #4.)
After that there 15 plies 3 inches wide for the aluminum angle to bolt to.
The fixed gear is attached via a bolt that runs between the two pieces of angle.

I wish I had a set of Cozy plans to compare against. I need to work on my website to document this better.

Hmmm... Cozy's get the LWY/LWX at the end of step 5, then the electrical pass through, then the 6 plies, but over a 3/4" Last-a-Foam layer (I've never heard of Polly-U), after that it's trim to length, no mention of 15 ply strips, so it looks like it's either long specific or we do something similar later in another chapter on the Cozy.

There do seem to be quite a lot of overlapping ply buildups going across the bulkheads and sides in the landing gear region in chapter 9, perhaps these local reinforcements serve the same purpose.

As in the 2lb crumbly stuff that turns to dust if you look at it funny?

Or low density Last-a-foam (used to be Clark foam)?

The "Crumbly Cr@p" is what is called out in the plans. (I really hate that stuff!)
You won't find it in my build.

I'm using 3# Divinylcell 1 inch for this. The only thing that will be here between the rear seat and the firewall is a sump tank.

Here’s what I ended up with on this issue:
I did the whole area with 21 plies of BID.
I did a lay up of 18 plies on a poly sheet first.
I them made a pattern of the area and cut out 2 panels from the cured 18 ply lay up.
These were then sanded on both sides (in spite on the fact that they had peel ply.)
After hard shelling my foam filler I laid out 2 plies of BID, laid in my precut panel followed with another BID ply then popped everything into the vacuum bag.

After talking with the CozyGirrrl and doing more research, it became apparent that this area will be taking a lot of stress due to the rotary engine weight and mount. The original Long-EZ plans were not engineered for this option.

I did find a link which did go into some detail as to how the mount points on the firewall should/could be reinforced. (Danged if I can find it now though!) It’s in the archives here.
