Default N200LZ: Chapter 6 - Fuselage Floor

I had a good plane day today. I tackled the fuselage floor.
I started at about 1:00 PM. I had already laid out the floor areas on the foam.
I then marked out specific areas within each area that need to be profiled.
I identified the areas that would be lowered by at least 1.25 inches, then 1.0 inches on up to a 1/4 inch. I then used the router to cut out the rough relief using 1/4 inch plywood strips to define my limits.

3:30 PM and that step is done. Run a couple errands and back at sanding out the final profile with an Orbital sander, Fien Multimaster and 60 grit hand sanding.

7:10 PM Done and ready for hardshelling. Clean up and grill some chicken.

9:15 PM Spreading Micro for the hardshelling.
Done and I'm ready for glass in the AM. That should make it possble to flox the floor in place in the afternoon and that's it for chapter 6.

Motivation? My EAA chapter meeting is tomorrow night and I want to be able to say I'm starting a new chapter. It's motivation for me and I hope my progress will be motivation for other builders!

You hardshelled the floor?

Say that again????

Sounds like you hardshelled BEFORE you glassed

Yes. We discussed this in an earlier thread. I hardshell, sand, glass and bag. (vacuum bag)

I must have missed this, I thought hard shelling was a reference to a finishing technique.

I think the procedure you just described doesn't produce as good a bond as the plans method, slurry, then immediately glass the piece. I would not use procedure you described.

I also believe that this procedure is more time consuming than the plans procedure.

I'll have to go back and review the "hardshelling" posts that you described.

Yeah, at first take I had the same reaction. I read this technique in one of Marc Z's posts and gave it a shot and really liked it. As far as time consuming, since my last post I've gone out and had breakfast at the local diner, sanded my fuse floor and am now cutting glass.

When you sand it out, it reminds me of using sanding sealer on a wordworking project. The surface is really rough to start with and after sanding it feels real uniform. The last thing I did last night before going to bed was to micro the inside of the floor. Didn't lose any time waiting for it to cure before sanding 'cause I was sleeping!

The router technique really helped me to define guidelines to sand to as well as cutting out some time. (messy part of the project I must say.) I had a couple bad spots that I was able to fill in my hardshell step. After everything was covered in micro, I mixed more micro spheres into my reaining micro to get to a dry micro state and fixed any divots I could find. Ended up with a nice product after my sanding.

Ha ha haaa. I love your style Waiter!
I did get the floor glassed and in the bag.
I wanted to get it floxed and taped today but I think that would be pushing it. I could do it if I skipped the EAA meeting tonight but I have the whole week off so not to rush it!
...... well maybe I can get it floxed.

One point that might clarify... TMann's vacuum bagging... and the micro slurry tends to migrated into the glass under vacuum if uncured when the glass is laid. There are other solutions, but for H45 and weaker foams, I hardshell too when vac bagging.

I have done some hard shelling and love it. No micro in the cloth, nice smooth glass, easier to work out air bubbles for me anyway. I understand the differences in the bonding process just wonder if it really makes that much difference in our planes? I have seen so many post from others stating that hard shelling produces a weaker part. I wonder if anyone has actually done test to determine this?

Marc wrote this up in an earlier sequence (subject: Vacuum Bagging.)
Now from past experience, anything questionable gets a critical review from Marc.
He had nothing negative and seemed to think this was every bit as strong and reliable as the previous technique.

That's all I need.

Side note: I did get the bottom floxed to the rest of the fuse. I'll run tapes tomorrow and close out chapter 6.
