Default N200LZ: Chapter 18 - Canopy Hinge

I'm planning on using the Berkut style hinge on my canopy. I have drawings to work from and if I have to make it from scratch, I will fabricate if from Carbon Fiber.

Has anyone else either constructed thiis hinge or found a source for it?
(Or maybe have a set in the back of their hangar?)

I did do some more research on this. The original hinge was cast in Aluminum 356. Sounds like this is something I'll have to make myself.

Guess that's what problem solving is all about.

AFAIK the Berkut canopy hinges backwards; is that really what you want? a built-in failure mode? Why not opt for the fail-safe forward opening half canopy of the Cosy Classic? In that case, you could contact Uli Wolter for his carbon fiber hinges.

Yes.

Do you have any statistics to support that with regards to the Berkut?
I've never read anything like that.
Is this a percieved failure rate or an actual?

If this canopy opens during flight it's because I'm getting out.

Does anyone know if 6061-T6 Aluminum could be shaped (bent) to make this hinge?
I think I could do this with a couple sections of .5 x 2.0 aluminum stock.
I was talking with someone last night whos stated that they did not have much success with a CF version of the hinge.

The Berkut population is so miniscule, statistics would be meaningless anyway. Its canopy is an accident waiting to happen; it's Murphy's law personified. Look at the sometimes fatal consequnces of the much more benign side-hinged canopy opening in flight. By the way, how many suicide doors have you seen in cars lately?

Not going to debate this here. I've made 265 jumps as a skydiver/jumpmaster.
The last thing I want to experience is being caught in a plane I can't get out of with a parachute on my back.

What I'm looking for here is a little feedback to make this happen.

2000+ hours later and nothing I've ever flown (well, that didn't have a door ) had a forward opening canopy. Admitedly not a builder (yet) but to my way of thinking, forward opening completely eliminates your options. I wonder if the disasterous consequences of side opening canopies opening in flight are a result of the fact that they open sideways .... planes fly reasonably well, most times with canopy gone ... a bit noisely, perahps, but still flying.

It's obvious that anyone can find documentation to support their stand on most any issue. Lawyers do it for a living.

The problem with side opening is that it will slam open and slam shut when you are not expecting it. when open it may have some effect on directional control. but it may be that they forget to fly the airplane. forward hinge just comes open about 4" and floats there, not a big deal if you remember to fly the airplane. one Eracer builder had this happen and tried to hold it closed but forgot to fly the airplane and landed short, ripping out the gear. Rearward hinge does just what you would think, it departs and hits the prop. Ronenburg had this happen to a Berkut on take off at Santa Monica. landed safely and only nicked the prop. it may be ok if you want to bail out. that is not a very good reason to bail if you can still fly the plane. besides your pasenger may not be experianced in bailing out. the odds are that you will loose the canopy ( and maybe the plane ) for a brainfart or latch malfuction way before the need to bail for another malfuction

Hmmmmmmm .......... I wonder why those guys over at Berkut never changed the design?

Anyway ....... back to the subject at hand. I read a little about 'annealing' and it sounds like the aluminum can be worked after this process and still maintain it strength and integrity. That may be the way to go.

The other option would be to somehow cut the profile of the hinge out of sheet stock and then sandwich them back together.

My point was that a forward opening canopy eliminates the failure modes of a backward opening one without adding new ones, while a hinge pin releasing mechanism still offers the option to release the canopy and bail-out. With a backward opening canopy, if the shit, sorry I meant the canopy :-), hits the fan, that's it, you have to bail out. What is off-topic about that?

I know you are trying to be helpful ..... and I appreciate that. Thank-you.

I have already weighed these issues.
Currently, the problem I am trying to solve is that of the hinge itself.

If you've set your mind on the admittedly cooler looking Berkut/F-16 backward opening half canopies you can still use the hinges of the forward opening Cosy Classic canopy; I'll gladly scan and send you the relevant pages of the Cosy Classic manual, strictly for educational purposes :-)
