Default N200LZ: Chapter 10 - Canard

I'm well into the construction of my canard. I did a couple things different here.

When I made my templates, I put them on top of another piece of 16 guage aluminum. Using a fine point sharpie and a small washer, I traced an outline that was about 1/8th of a inch larger. After cutting that out I used that as my cutting template and them sanded down to the original templates using a 1" x 4" x 6 foot piece of aluminum extrusion with 36 grit glued to it. I also set up a 6 foot piece of 1" electrical conduit with 36 grit for the inside curves.

I made my cores the full length of the canard instead of adding the 11 inch pieces on the ends later. My shear web runs the full length as will my spar caps which I am starting on today.

I vacuum bagged the shear web yesterday and used 2 lengths of aluminum extrusion 1" x 2" x 12ft clamped along the cutouts for the spar caps to insure proper alignment.

Right now, I'm just waiting for my micro to cure enough to start on the bottom spar cap layup. I notched my 9 jig templates to accept the 1" x 2" extrusion for this layup again to insure my alignment is good.

My hardware is all from CG Products and is all "spot on".

Peeled my vacuum bag off this afternoon to find that I could fit another full length span of the canard. Lots of glass in this layup for sure. The vacuum system really gets the most out of it.

After laying up another ply of tape, I hardshelled the bottom in preparation for the skin layup. What worked out nice was the fact that I had peel ply over the spar cap which protects it from the micro.

The full span spar cap works out real well!

I think you will find that you will need to cut a notch out of the extended shear web and spar caps when you provide clearance for the outboard elevator weights.
